Susan Mary Barrantes (née Wright, 9 June 1937 – 19 August 1998) was an Argentine socialite and the mother of Sarah, Duchess of York, making her the grandmother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
Susan Barrantes was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Ronald Edgar Wright, an Argentine landowner, and his wife Dora Rosa, née Smith. She was introduced to Prince Andrew, Duke of York, by a mutual friend in 1963, and the couple married the following year. They had two daughters, Sarah, born in 1959, and Jane, born in 1961. The Duke and Susan Barrantes divorced in 1974.
Known for her outgoing personality and love of socializing, Susan Barrantes was a colorful character in British high society during the 1980s and 1990s. She was known for her love of parties, horses, and polo, and was often seen at social events and polo matches.
Susan Barrantes passed away in a car accident in Argentina in 1998 at the age of 61. Her daughter, Sarah, Duchess of York, has spoken fondly of her mother and credited her with instilling a love of horses and a sense of independence in her daughters.
